You already know the importance of sound dental hygiene to maintaining your dental health and preventing gum disease. In addition, good dental hygiene is closely linked to improved overall health. Taking care of your teeth and gums can be an important step in preventing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even problems during pregnancy.

The best dental hygiene regimens combine good oral hygiene habits at home with excellent professional dental care from your Amarillo family and general dentist.

At Advanced Dentistry of Amarillo, Dr. Miller and Dr. Esler, along with their staff, provide an individualized approach by integrating the disciplines of general dentistry, cosmetic dentistryneuromuscular dentistry, and restorative dentistry. In so doing, Dr. Miller and Dr. Esler are able to provide you with the best and most long-lasting results from our treatments.

Dental Care at Home

Brushing and flossing are the foundations of good oral health. The goal of good home care is to prevent plaque buildup that can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Here are some tips to maximize your results:

  • Brushing: If you can’t brush after every meal, brush at least twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed. Brush for at least three minutes each time. You may find it helpful to have a timer. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, and brush in small circles. Brushing too hard can actually harm the teeth and gums, so a soft brush with a firm but gentle touch is ideal. You can divide your mouth into quadrants to ensure you get to every surface.
  • Flossing: Flossing is more often neglected, but it is essential to cleaning between the teeth where brushing can’t reach. If you struggle with flossing, try different types of floss or small flossers that can help you get to hard to reach spaces. Flossing after meals is ideal, but floss at least once per day minimum.

Prevention Services

The best way to protect your oral health is to stop any potential problems before they start, or before they become serious. That is why Advanced Dentistry of Amarillo offers a comprehensive array of preventive services, designed to maintain oral health, while also providing early diagnosis and treatment of any issues as they arise.

Much of the responsibility for good preventive care lies with you. Make sure to brush your teeth twice per day, floss daily, and visit your dentist once every six months for a professional dental cleaning and a thorough examination of your oral health.

What to expect during a checkup

Regular checkups from your dentist are crucial to your oral health. A professional cleaning from a certified and experienced dental practice is the only way that all plaque and bacteria can be removed from your teeth. This plaque and bacteria are the building blocks for tooth decay, but we can remove all stains and deposits from your teeth, then polish and floss them, all in an effort to minimize your risk of tooth decay.

The examinations that take place as part of a check-up are just as important because they allow us to maintain a thorough record of your oral health and identify any changes. We often take X-rays using our digital X-ray technology as part of our documentation process. The X-rays also allow us to see abnormalities or concerns between teeth, under the gum tissue, or involving the jaw joints or bone.

The consequences of not receiving dental care

When you do not receive regular dental care, it increases the risk that a major oral health problem develops.

Serious oral health issues can increase your likelihood of developing other conditions that can be chronic and even life threatening.

  • Individuals with gum disease have almost twice the risk of developing heart disease, as the plaque and bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream and accumulate in the arteries.
  • Patients with gum disease also have a higher risk of becoming diabetics.
  • Missing teeth, or the deterioration of supporting bone structure in the mouth, can increase your risk of stroke.
  • Increases the chance of a preterm birth, or low birth weight in babies.

Research also has linked poor oral health to other chronic ailments such as kidney disease, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Take care of yourself by maintaining a thorough regimen of oral hygiene, and encouraging these same good habits in your children.
