Serving Amarillo, Canyon, Dalhart and the surrounding Texas Panhandle
A qualified and experienced dentist focuses on more than just your teeth. Having healthy gums also is important to your oral health, as well as your overall health. If an infection develops in your gum tissue, which is known as gum disease, then the Esler Dental Group can provide treatment through laser therapy.
What is laser therapy?
Precise dental laser technology allows our staff to treat your gums in a much more efficient and effective manner while minimizing discomfort and reducing recovery time following a procedure.
We perform our laser gum therapy procedures using a soft-tissue diode laser. This laser can be used to treat gum disease by removing areas of bacteria or infection from your gums. Laser therapy can thoroughly clean the periodontal pockets that develop during periodontitis, an advanced stage of gum disease. The pockets that form in periodontitis can only be cleaned through a professional dental procedure. If left untreated, these pockets only will grow deeper, while the bacteria in them multiple in your mouth to form new pockets.
We also can use laser therapy to perform a gum re-contouring for patients who want to improve the appearance of their smile if their gums rest too high on their mouth or that result in a “gummy” smile.
In addition to using the soft-tissue laser, we also use a diagnodent laser as a diagnostic tool. This laser detects areas of infection and bacteria much more quickly than even the most experienced and trained dentist could find them when performing a traditional oral examination. Since early detection is so important in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, a diagnodent laser is one of the most valuable technologies at our disposal.
Why should you choose laser gum therapy?
Laser therapy is much more comfortable than alternative treatments for gum disease, such as traditional gum surgery. The lasers themselves do not emit any annoying or distracting sounds while in use, aside from a rush of air as suction is used to keep your gum cool and clean during a treatment.
Laser therapy is a better choice for many patients, as compared to traditional gum surgery, for these reasons:
- Less pain: Patients who undergo laser gum therapy experience significantly less discomfort during and after the procedure.
- Less bleeding: Bleeding and swelling are minimal because the dental laser immediately cauterizes any incision that is made.
- Faster procedures: A dental laser can work much more quickly than a scalpel used even in the hand of a vastly experienced periodontist or oral surgeon. This reduces how much time you spend in the dental chair, letting you get on with your day.
Is therapy needed for my gum disease?
Yes. The consequences of gum disease can be dire if you do not have the infection properly diagnosed or treated. Over time, gum disease can cause tooth loss and bone loss. Long term, a case of gum disease even can threaten your overall health; studies show patients with gum disease are twice as likely to develop cardiac problems as the plaque from your infected mouth enters the bloodstream.
