Serving Amarillo, Canyon, Dalhart and the surrounding Texas Panhandle
Has your tooth sustained major damage? If so, your dentists Dr. Trey H. Miller and Dr. Clinton L. Esler at Advanced Dentistry of Amarillo can restore the damaged exterior and prevent total loss of the tooth.
What to expect from a crown procedure
When we install a crown, it replaces the entire exterior of a tooth, also protecting the interior structure of the tooth, which includes the nerves and the root. The crown itself is essentially like a cap that fits over your entire tooth adding strength and durability, while appearing completely natural.
Any crown procedure requires two separate visits to our office. At the first visit, the area that has been damaged is removed, and the tooth is cleaned. Our staff will take an impression of the tooth that are used by the lab, and then place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being made in the lab. At the subsequent visit, we will install the permanent crown.
A crown can be used to repair any of the following issues:
- Broken or fractured tooth
- Misshapen, short, brittle, or weak tooth
- Large area of decay in a tooth
- Following a root canal procedure
Types of crowns
Advanced Dentistry of Amarillo offers two types of dental crowns:
A PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crown has a metal substructure that is covered with dental porcelain. The inner portion of the crown is made of metal (alloy mixture), and on the exterior is high-grade dental porcelain that is fused to the metal. The porcelain is matched to the shade of your natural teeth.
A metal-free crown is made entirely of high-grade dental porcelain. These crowns typically are installed in highly visible areas of the mouth such as the front teeth, or used on patients who have a metal allergy.
